This year, we invite Windsor Charter Academy students to participate in the Optimist Club Oratorical Contest, hosted by the Optimist Club of Windsor, a volunteer service organization dedicated to supporting young people in our community. Since 1928, the contest has given students public speaking experience and the chance to compete for scholarships. Participants prepare a four- to five-minute speech on an assigned topic. Local winners can advance to the district level, where first place earns a $2,500 scholarship, and continue on to regional competitions.
This year’s topic is “How My Actions Strengthen Those Around Me.” The prompt asks students to examine their choices and the ripple effect they have on friends, family, teammates, and classmates. To download the application, please click here.
WCA students have won this contest in the past, and we are eager to grow the program and give more students the chance to build confidence as speakers. Students do not need prior speech experience to participate. Participating students will meet four times after school, building from first ideas to a polished, competition-ready speech:
November 9th @ 3:30 p.m.: Introduce the topic and the speech requirements.
December 9th @ 3:30 p.m.: Answer questions and share presentation tips.
January 20th @ 3:30 p.m.: Complete applications, review the contest location and time, and practice presentations.
February 17th @ 3:30 p.m.: Practice speeches and confirm final contest details.
All meetings will take place in the Firebird Facility conference room. To participate, please complete the Oratorical Contest Interest Form. We look forward to helping our students find their voices and share them with the Windsor community!
