Promoting Positive Study Habits and Test-Taking Tips
It’s hard to believe we’re already nearing the halfway point of the school year! With finals approaching—new for some students and a source of stress for others—it’s a great time to support healthy study habits. We often remind students that some stress is normal and even helpful. As they move through middle school, they’re building habits that will support their success for years to come.
Here are a few ways to help your student stay on track:
Create a routine: Set a regular study time and choose a quiet, distraction-free space.
Break it down: Encourage studying in short, manageable chunks and reviewing material over several days rather than cramming the night before.
Stay organized: Planners, calendars, and phone reminders are great tools for keeping track of homework, projects, and upcoming tests.
Practice active learning: Summarizing notes, making flashcards, or teaching the material to someone else helps the brain retain information more effectively than simply rereading.
Prioritize wellness: Good sleep, healthy meals, movement, and brain breaks all support focus and learning.
When it comes to test-taking, remind your student to take deep breaths, read directions carefully, and pace themselves. Confidence grows from preparation, and each quiz or test is an opportunity to build stronger skills for the future.
Advisory Lessons
This month in Advisory, students are continuing the Olweus curriculum. Recent topics include identifying “hot spots,” navigating hallway hazards, reflecting on the school year so far, and participating in a Sources of Strength lesson led by our peer leaders on trusted adults.
Have a wonderful break — we will see you in January!
